About Lail Design

Lail Design was founded in 2016 by Master Thrower Brad Lail & Textile Designer Jennifer Bowskill

From their home studio in Woodstock NY, the couple began brainstorming a basic foundation line of ceramics intended for everyday use. The line has since evolved to incorporate macrame plant hangers, vases, planters, and other home decor goods.

Brad trained in North Carolina as a production thrower, his training has been informed by the teachings of Leach pottery, Michael Cardew, and traditional North Carolina pottery. He studied abroad in Jingdezhen, China, and then in England. He has been a journeyman potter for much of his career before deciding to try his hand at his own company.

Jenny studied Textile Design in Winchester UK,  and then continued her career in NYC as a designer. She has worked the spectrum of textile design, from interior furnishings and illustration to fashion. Her eye for collections, color, and pattern have shaped the Lail aesthetic. After many years working in the Fashion industry she too wanted to branch out on her own.

Lail ceramics are all hand thrown, trimmed, bisque fired, and then glazed. All the glazes are mixed in house, some of which are made from natural clay harvested from the property, and ash from the family's wood stove. The pots are then fired in a gas kiln with a reduction atmosphere, Brad uses no instruments just cone packs which melt at accumulating temperatures. The resulting glazes have a depth and sensitivity that many modern electrical fired pieces cannot achieve. In addition, the high temperature of gas means that the pieces are safe for use in the microwave, and dishwasher.

Rooted in traditional craftsmanship with a modern design approach Lail Design create high quality ceramics with a minimal aesthetic. Durable, versatile and timeless, they are designed to outlive fads and last a lifetime.
